Efficient testing of line-conducted interference according to ISO 7637-4 Sep. 27, 2017

The increasing electrification of the drive train means increasing standards in terms of the immunity of components to line-conducted interference (immission). Also the generated disturbances of the components themselves must not exceed certain limit values (emission) as otherwise other components could be disturbed. The resulting requirements are creating new challenges for the developers of electrical components and electric vehicles. The line-conducted immunity of high-voltage components is tested by adding predefined interference to the high-voltage cables. This interference is defined by the draft standard ISO 7637-4. Its signal shapes A, B, and C correspond to the real line-conducted interference in the vehicle. Furthermore limit values for the emitted interference are defined.

The Scienlab Voltage Ripple Generator (VRG) offers an efficient testing of line-conducted interference with only one system. Using various test scenarios, all signal forms can be emulated and the maximum line-conducted interference emission can be determined. Because of the integrated solution approach the VRG also offers an emulation of the vehicle electrical system impedance, integrated measuring technology, and a separate, bi-directional Dynamic DC Emulator.

The test system offers a variety of applications and can be used for all components which are connected to a high-voltage grid and are in the voltage range between 60 VDC and 1500 VDC. Among other things, this includes components like batteries, BMS, inverters, DC/DC converters, on-board chargers, or charging managers for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The VRG can also be used for efficient immunity testing of components from other areas such as aerospace technology.

Scienlab summer festivities Jul. 14, 2017

The Scienlab teamwork is characterized by cooperation. We are working with an inventive spirit and enjoy what we are doing on a daily basis, so we can bring the electric mobility forward – that is what makes our work special.

The festivities for employees contribute to the unique and cooperative working atmosphere and therefore the company tradition, the Scienlab summer party, was continued this year. The entire staff spent a great day together with their families at the company headquarter in Bochum.

In his speech, Dr.-Ing. Michael Schugt, one of the four founders and CEOs, acknowledged the successful development of Scienlab during the last years and was looking forward to the future: “The strong team spirit and our daily motivation encourage us to be actively involved in shaping the electronic age. We are looking forward to many more interesting projects together with our customers.“

Efficient testing of charging technology and power electronics Jun. 14, 2017

The major challenge in developing and producing electronic systems is having to comply with different standards worldwide in order to guarantee faultless operation. For testing electronic power high-voltage components and systems Scienlab offers compact and modular solutions, the Dynamic AC and DC Emulator. The Scienlab emulators can cover all applications in automotive and industrial fields as an all-in-one system.

Characteristics as for example maximum failure safety, energy efficiency, control and measurement accuracy as well as quality can be tested with the system efficiently. Furthermore the bi-directional mode enables electric vehicles (EV) to be emulated as a sink or charging infrastructure (EVSE) as a source in order to investigate their interoperability in combination with the Scienlab ChargingDiscoverySystem (CDS) as well as the validation of AC and DC charging processes.

Charging made easy with the Scienlab On-Board Charger May. 22, 2017

There are many requirements that must be met in order to charge a vehicle, including new challenges for the power electronics in light of the increasing extension of the charging infrastructure from AC charging to DC charging. In addition, the vehicle must be able to handle both PWM communication (AC) and PLC communication (DC).

The Scienlab On-Board Charger makes it easy for the customer, with integrated power electronics that offer outstanding AC charging performance combined with a compact design thanks to silicon carbide semiconductor technology. The on-board charger can also be used for DC fast charging (CCS) with the integrated V2G ComModule due to its ability to handle both PWM and PLC communication. Other Scienlab components support the CHAdeMO and GB/T charging standards.

The benefits are clear: the Scienlab On-Board Charger ideally equips the vehicle for the extension of the fast charging infrastructure and also enables it to be charged at all standard-compliant charging stations if necessary. This means no additional effort or cost for the customer.

TV interview with Scienlab May. 09, 2017

On May 9th 2017 Dr.-Ing. Michael Schugt, one of four Scienlab managing directors, gave a live TV interview with the happenings, politics and documentation channel phoenix. When searching for successful and innovative companies in NRW the public broadcaster run by ARD and ZDF came across Scienlab and requested an interview.

In the context of the NRW state election the channel reported about the business location NRW. The moderator Jan-Christoph Nüse interviewed Michael Schugt about new prospects of the automotive sector in the Ruhr area. You can find the interview on the phoenix youtube channel.

BMW invests in Scienlab test laboratories for developing E/E-components Jan. 12, 2017

Electromobility picks up momentum and German automobile manufacturers increase their investments in the electrification of their vehicles. Among them also BMW: At the end of 2016 the Group told the „Süddeutsche Zeitung“ it seeks to increase the sales of electrically driven vehicles by two-third to 100,000 cars in 2017 and is planning to expand its product range with new electrical and hybrid models in the following years. For the development support of the required electronic components BMW has chosen Scienlab as strategic partner up to the year 2020 and beyond and invests in comprehensive test laboratories for developing energy storages and inverters.

Michael Schugt, one of the four managing directors of Scienlab appreciates the accelerating trend towards electromobility: „We have already been cooperating with BMW as partners for more than ten years and we have been allowed to accompany the development of several innovations in the area of the electrified drive train. We are happy to make a sustainable contribution to the worldwide expansion of the electromobility together with our partners. This motivates us each and every day.”

Scienlab celebrates its 15th company anniversary Jul. 26, 2016

What began in 2001 as an engineering office has grown into a global operating, highly specialized technology company with three locations in Germany and China. By now more than 100 employees at Scienlab innovatively shape the electronic future day by day.

To adequately celebrate the 15th company anniversary, a big summer party was held. The entire staff spent a great day together – at first there was a team challenge and later the anniversary was celebrated together with the families at the company headquarter in Bochum. In his opening speech Dr.-Ing. Michael Schugt, one of the four founders and CEOs, acknowledged the extraordinary development of Scienlab in the last 15 years.

Our longstanding and successful development is not possible without our customers, business partners and employees: This is why we thank everybody who accompanied, supported and trusted Scienlab during the past 15 years. We look forward to many more years of innovations and exciting projects.

Hannover Messe: E-mobility innovations May. 18, 2016

Scienlab presented innovative solutions for the testing of charging technology and infrastructure as well as for BMS development at the Hannover Messe from 25 to 29 April.

The “Golden Test Device” was presented to a broad expert audience on the exhibition stand of the US Department of Energy/ANL and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The “Golden Test Device” is a standardized, modular test system to ensure the interoperability of electric vehicles and charging interfaces. It constitutes a central building block of the BMWI research project SLAM (“Fast Charging Network for Key Traffic Connections and Metropolitan Areas”). Apart from ensuring the compliance of electric vehicles and charging interfaces, the project is among other things aimed at the need-based and user-oriented positioning of a fast charging infrastructure in cities and along the main traffic connections as well as the development of sustainable business and operating models.

Scienlab supports the project partners of Volkswagen, BMW Group, Daimler AG, Porsche AG, Deutscher Genossenschaftsverlag, EnBW, RWTH Aachen University, the Institut für Arbeitswissenschaft und Technologiemanagement (Institute for Ergonomics and Technology Management, IAT) of Stuttgart University, which cooperates closely with the Fraunhofer IAO, in the project's sub-goal “Compliance Testing of Electric Vehicles with Charging Stations (Golden Test Device)”.

Moreover, Scienlab presented its engineering services and products for the entire development chain of battery management systems (BMS) on the stand of Linear Technology. Apart from the energy storage test system for characterization of cells the BMS test environment for BMS development and validation as well as the most recently developed module monitoring electronics with Linear Technology LTC Multicell Battery Monitor were also exhibited.

Efficient formation: Scienlab's expertise is in demand Mar. 14, 2016

Scienlab is partner of the recently launched funded alliance project “EffiForm - Efficient formation strategies for increased durability, reliability and safety as well as cost reduction in the production of lithium-ion cells/batteries”. In this project, Scienlab works together with specialists from VARTA Microbattery GmbH, Daimler AG, BMW AG, thyssenkrupp System Engineering GmbH, the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS, the Technical University Munich and the MEET battery research center of the University of Münster on technological innovations in the field of formation of lithium-ion cells.

Scienlab will support the project with its many years of experience and expertise in the development of systems for the testing and formation of battery cells. The task of Scienlab in the project is the development of on budget formation technology, energy management and the provision of suitable test systems for modeling and validation.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the EU support programme “Batteries2020 – Battery materials for future applications in electric mobility”, and will run for three years.

Scienlab honored for the promotion of voluntary commitment Feb. 15, 2016

Scienlab received an honorable mention from the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (Bundesanstalt Technisches Hilfswerk, THW) to recognize and acknowledge the release of its employees. The THW is an organization built on the basis of around 80,000 volunteers and is therefore dependent on the occupational release of its supporters to be able to help the population in emergencies and disasters.

On the occasion of the A+A trade fair in Düsseldorf, THW President Mr. Albrecht Broemme and the State Commissioner Dr. Hans-Ingo Schliwienski honored 35 volunteer-friendly employers from North Rhine-Westphalia, including Scienlab. The certificate was accepted on behalf of the company by Scienlab employees Ms. Anne Stallbaum (second from left) and Mr. Andre Carel (second from right).

Innovative solutions for the development of battery management systems Nov. 30, 2015

Scienlab offers customer-specific solutions for the reliable development and validation of battery management systems. The services on offer range from modeling and characterization of the battery cell through model implementation to the customized and modular hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) system. The test environment permits fast, flexible and reproducible tests for emulating the behavior of real battery cells, current and temperature sensors as well as communication with external systems.

Testing the charging function and interoperability Sep. 28, 2015

Both development and spread of electric and plug-in vehicles (EV, PHEV) depend on the expansion and interference-free utilization of the charging infrastructure (electric vehicle supply equipment, EVSE). Due to the yet relatively recent standards, the resulting lack of field experience and the increasing number of market participants, various problems in the interaction of EV and EVSE can be observed often.

Scienlab offers a modular test environment for EV and EVSE charging systems from mobile use to application in the laboratory. As the central element the ChargingDiscoverySystem (CDS) emulates the charging communication of EV or EVSE. At the same time, the electrical quantities are measured and checked for compliance with the standards. Test sequences can be defined freely and subsequently performed automatically via the ChargingDiscover PC operating software. The CDS also takes over the synchronized control of additional power sources and sinks.

Possible areas of application are:

  • Independent function tests of the charging interface of EV and EVSE
  • Verification of charging columns, wall boxes and vehicles for compliance with the standard
  • Testing of interoperability during charging, in the laboratory during development, in the field as well as in the workshop by means of guided field tests
  • Verification of charging components for international markets through emulation of international charging communication standards and low voltage grids
  • Targeted and reproducible testing of EV and EVSE reaction in case of failure
  • Holistic verification of the charging interface through addition of AC and/or DC power sources/sinks

Measurement & Control Modules for challenging measurement tasks Apr. 22, 2015

Scienlab has developed reliable Measurement & Control Modules for a wide range of test, measurement, and control tasks, e.g. in the development of automotive and industrial products. They can be combined as required for the measurement task and scope. They are ideal for carrying out challenging measurement tasks, even under difficult environmental conditions (e.g. in a climate chamber). The modules offer top quality, robustness, and easy and intuitive operation.

50 million automotive piezo actuators tested using Scienlab test systems Dec. 18, 2014

The German and European market leaders in the area of piezoelectric injection technology have been using Scienlab test systems since 2003. More than 50 million actuators for gasoline and diesel engines were tested since using Scienlab technology – from development to production support to the very last test before installing the engines in the vehicles. Apart from functional tests, the manufacturers can also perform endurance tests and quality assurance tests. Over 10 million vehicles in total have been delivered with Scienlab-tested injectors since 2003.

The outcome speaks for itself: no case of failure in the field has been reported. For automotive suppliers it is equally important that the Scienlab systems are very energy-efficient and practically maintenance-free even after years of continuous operation. They thus make a contribution to cost efficiency.
